Majuli Community School

The bridge between education and communities on the world’s largest river island

Voluntary Workshop
Site : Majuli, Assam, India

This project was conceived and executed by a team of nearly twenty-five individuals during a three-week hands-on workshop in Majuli, Assam, the world’s largest river island. Situated in a region prone to annual floods and earthquakes, a design solution was needed to address these habitual act of nature.
The project identified a remote village on the island lacking a community gathering space or school. Therefore, a community school was constructed using local materials and building techniques, with the assistance of local artisans, to facilitate easy replication by community members.
The primary objective was to explore how contextual architectural innovation can enhance disaster adaptation strategies.
